Parquet construction: a look beneath the surface

Why construction matters
Parquet is a natural material. Wood responds to temperature and humidity: it expands, it shrinks, and if it is restrained badly it cups or opens gaps. Each construction manages that movement in a different way. The right one gives you a stable floor that lasts decades; the wrong one gives you creeping joints, gaps and a short service life.
Solid parquet (single layer)
One continuous piece of real timber through the full thickness — typically 14–22 mm. The traditional format, laid in European buildings for centuries.
Advantages
- Can be sanded many times — 5–10 refinishes over its life
- Service life of 70–100+ years
- The strongest resale argument of any wood floor
- The most authentic feel underfoot
Drawbacks
- Reacts strongly to humidity changes — demanding in climates with a long, dry heating season
- Expensive — roughly twice the cost of a three-layer board
- Demanding to lay — always a job for a professional fitter
- Not suitable for underfloor heating (too thick, poor heat transfer)
Two-layer engineered parquet
Built from two main layers:
Wear layer (top)
High-grade hardwood (oak, walnut and similar), 3–6 mm thick. This is the layer you see and the layer you sand: grain, colour, texture.
Substrate
A layer of softwood or wood-based board (plywood, HDF). It carries the stability and stops the board distorting.
Two-layer boards have become uncommon across most of Europe — the three-layer build displaced them because it is both more stable and cheaper to produce.
Three-layer engineered parquet (our collection)
Three-layer construction is the European standard for premium parquet today. Three layers give it its name:
1. Wear layer
As in a two-layer board — 3–4 mm of high-grade hardwood. Our entire collection is European oak from Germany, Austria and Italy.
2. Core layer
Cheaper, softer timber (spruce, pine, poplar) laid cross-bonded — the grain runs perpendicular to the grain of the wear layer above it. That cross-orientation is the whole point: it locks the board against expansion and shrinkage as humidity changes.
3. Backing (balancing veneer)
The bottom layer, again in softer timber, but running in the same direction as the wear layer. It works as a counter-pull to the top face — without it the board would cup or crown as the two sides took up moisture at different rates.
Advantages
- Dimensionally stable through humidity swings — suits European homes with a long heating season
- Suitable for underfloor heating
- Can be sanded once or twice (3–4 mm wear layer)
- Factory-finished — oiled or lacquered, ready to walk on
- Straightforward to lay — Drop Down Click system
- Less expensive than solid parquet
- Service life of 25–40 years
Drawbacks
- A limited number of sandings (1–2, against 5–10 for solid)
- Not quite as authentic as solid (which matters less in practice than it sounds)

Which construction should you choose?
Modern flat or new build
Three-layer — particularly where there is underfloor heating. Stable, quick to lay, the best balance of cost and quality.
Period wood floors (renovation)
If you are restoring a nineteenth-century building with original solid oak boards, replacing like with like can be worth it for the sake of the fabric. For almost every other case, three-layer.
Commercial spaces
Three-layer with a 4 mm wear layer — it can be sanded twice and stands up to heavy foot traffic.
Underfloor heating

Wear layer thickness — why it matters
3 mm against 4 mm sounds marginal. In practice it decides how often the floor can be brought back:
- 3 mm: one sanding (roughly 1.5 mm is removed each time)
- 4 mm: two sandings, so two full refinishes over the life of the floor

FAQ
Which parquet construction is best for a European home?
Three-layer engineered oak — stable through the heating season, suitable for underfloor heating, sensibly priced.
Is solid parquet still made?
Yes, but in small volumes, mostly for restoration work. It typically costs 2–4× more than a three-layer board.
What is the difference between two-layer and three-layer?
The three-layer board has a balancing backing veneer, and that is what makes it markedly more resistant to cupping and distortion.
Can engineered parquet be cut on site?
