Wood effect vinyl flooring: the look of oak parquet, without the worry about water

Plenty of people want the warmth of wood underfoot but hesitate to lay real parquet in a kitchen, an entrance hall or beside a balcony door. That is precisely where wood effect vinyl flooring earns its place: it borrows the look of parquet and leaves the weaknesses behind. Below we explain how a convincing wood decor is made, what separates a good oak-look vinyl from a cheap one, and when it is the more sensible choice than natural timber.

How vinyl recreates wood

A convincing parquet impression works on two senses at once — sight and touch. A modern SPC plank, or LVT with a wood decor, is built up in four layers, and the top two do almost all of the work:

• Decor layer — a high-resolution photographic print of oak, ash or walnut. In a good collection the image does not repeat every third plank, so the floor never reads as wallpaper.
• Embossed texture (EIR) — the surface is pressed so that your fingers find the wood pores exactly where your eyes see them. This Embossed in Register effect is the single biggest factor in realism: cheap vinyl carries a random texture that does not line up with the print, and the eye catches it straight away.
• Wear layer — the clear protective film on top (0.5 mm on our SPC ranges), which is what determines scratch resistance and the usage class.
• SPC core — a rigid mineral core that gives the plank its stability and the solid feel underfoot of a real floorboard.

What makes a decor genuinely realistic

When a customer tells us “I don’t want it to look like lino”, they are really talking about five details that separate a premium wood effect from a cheap impression:

1. Registered embossing. The relief has to sit exactly on the printed grain and knots. It is the first thing we suggest checking with your fingertips once your free samples arrive.
2. A matt or low-sheen surface. Gloss gives the plastic away. Natural wood today is almost always matt, and so are our best collections.
3. Micro-bevelled edges. A light chamfer on each plank reads as individual boards rather than one continuous sheet.
4. Plank proportions. A long, narrow plank — 1220 × 180 mm, for instance — sits far closer to real parquet than a short, wide format.
5. Shade variation. In a good batch the planks differ slightly in tone, just as in natural wood, where no two boards are ever alike.

• Rio — darker, with more contrast in the grain, for more dramatic spaces.

Every collection comes directly from mills in Germany, Austria and Italy, with prices from €25.95/m². Usage class 33/42 means the floor is rated both for homes and for heavy commercial traffic.

Wood effect vinyl or real parquet?

This is the question we are asked most often. The short answer: if what matters most is natural material and an investment that lasts decades in a dry living room or bedroom, choose parquet. The budget is easy enough to sketch out. Material starts at €25.95/m² incl. VAT. Fitting a click floor is typically quoted at roughly €8–14/m² across Europe, although rates vary considerably by country and depend on the area and on how much subfloor preparation is required, so treat that as an indicative range rather than our price.
