Parquet in the bedroom: a warm, healthy floor to rest on
1 September 2026
The bedroom is the one room where your bare feet touch the floor first thing in the morning. What matters here is not resistance to traffic but warmth, quiet and a healthy atmosphere — and oak parquet delivers all three better than any other covering.

Most rooms in a home are chosen on looks and practicality. The bedroom is the exception. It exists for rest and sleep, so the floor has to answer a different set of questions: it should be pleasant to touch, keep dust down, give off no odour and add to the calm. This guide explains why parquet in the bedroom is the most logical choice, how to pick a shade that helps you rest, and what care a floor needs when hardly anyone walks on it.
Why parquet suits a bedroom so well
A bedroom floor has to meet needs that never come up elsewhere in the house. This is where natural wood pulls ahead of laminate, vinyl and carpet.
1. Warm underfoot, even without underfloor heating
Wood is a poor conductor of heat, which means it draws warmth from your skin far more slowly than stone, porcelain tiles or even vinyl. You notice it straight away: an oak board always feels neutral in temperature rather than cold. In a bedroom, where a bare foot meets the floor before anything else in the morning, that difference is more noticeable than anywhere else in the home.
2. A natural, healthy material with low VOC emissions
We spend a third of our lives asleep, so air quality in the bedroom is not a detail. Our oak boards are finished in the factory with low-VOC (volatile organic compound) lacquers and oils, and the timber carries FSC and PEFC certification — proof that it comes from responsibly managed forests. This is not a synthetic covering but a living material that breathes along with the room.
3. Anti-static, rather than a carpet full of dust
Plenty of people choose carpet in a bedroom for the sense of comfort, but carpet is a reservoir of dust, skin flakes and allergens that has to be vacuumed several times a week. Oak parquet works the other way round: it is anti-static and does not attract dust, so particles settle instead of hanging in the air and are easily wiped away. For allergy sufferers and for children's bedrooms that is a considerable advantage.
4. Quiet and acoustic comfort
Laid properly over a sound-absorbing underlay, parquet does not produce the hollow echo typical of cheap laminate. Wood naturally absorbs reflected sound, so the bedroom reads as quieter and calmer. Footsteps at night are softer too — which matters when the bedrooms sit directly above a living room.
5. A calm, welcoming look
And then there is the visual effect. The texture and tone of natural wood are a proven way to create a sense of calm. Oak grain, soft warm shades and the matt texture of an oiled surface turn a bedroom into a room you want to come back to at the end of the day. No printed decorative film on a laminate board reproduces that.
Parquet in the bedroom against the alternatives
To put the advantages in concrete terms, here is how oak parquet compares with the three most common bedroom floors, judged on what actually matters in a room meant for rest.
| Bedroom priority | Oak parquet | Vinyl (SPC) | Laminate | Carpet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warmth underfoot | Very good | Moderate | Moderate | Good |
| Natural material | 100 % wood | Synthetic | Film over HDF | Fibre |
| Dust / allergens | Anti-static | Anti-static | Anti-static | Traps dust |
| Acoustics | Quiet | Quiet | Can sound hollow | Very quiet |
| Renewable surface | Can be sanded | Replace the plank | Replace the plank | Not possible |
| Domestic warranty | 15 years | 25 years | Varies | — |
All three hard coverings are sound choices, but in a bedroom — where moisture and heavy traffic are essentially absent — natural wood shows every one of its strengths without a single compromise. If you are weighing up wood against a synthetic covering for other rooms, read our comparison of parquet and vinyl.
Oiled or lacquered parquet in a bedroom?
Because traffic here is light, you can choose on looks alone rather than on hard-wearing qualities. An oiled surface gives a matt, silky texture that is pleasant to touch and brings out the grain of the wood — for most people it is the most inviting option for a room meant for rest. A lacquered surface is easier to clean and more resistant to staining, but gives a more closed, more uniform appearance.
In a bedroom, where grit off shoes and spilled water are not part of daily life, oil is an excellent and almost risk-free choice. We compare the two finishes in detail in our article on oiled versus lacquered parquet.
Which shade should you choose for a bedroom?
Colour sets the mood in a bedroom, so it is worth deciding first what effect you are after.
- Light tones (natural oak, whitewashed, greyish) open the room up visually, reflect light and create a calm, Scandinavian atmosphere. Ideal for smaller or less well-lit bedrooms.
- Mid warm tones (honey, tawny oak) are the most versatile and welcoming option, and sit comfortably with timber furniture and textiles.
- Dark tones (smoked, deep brown oak) create a sense of intimacy and luxury, but work only in larger, well-lit bedrooms.
Our Oak Vienna board is a popular gently warm choice for bedrooms, while anyone after a quieter, cooler shade will be well served by Oak Bergen. The full palette, and how to match it to your walls, is covered in oak parquet colours.
Parquet in the bedroom and underfloor heating

More and more bedrooms are built with underfloor heating, and it pairs well with parquet. Our multilayer oak boards are dimensionally stable and suitable for underfloor heating — the only conditions are gradual, even temperature changes and a surface temperature that never exceeds 27 °C. We have set out every requirement and detail in our guide to parquet over underfloor heating. In a bedroom the system is especially welcome, because in the morning your foot meets a surface that is already warm.
Easy care, thanks to light traffic
One rarely mentioned but very real advantage of parquet in a bedroom is that the floor barely wears at all. Unlike a hallway or a kitchen, a bedroom sees no grit dragged in on shoes, no castor chairs and no spills. Care comes down to vacuuming with a soft head and an occasional wipe with a damp — not wet — cloth and a product made for wood.
Because traffic is so light, an oiled surface in a bedroom needs refreshing less often than anywhere else in the house. The general rules, which apply here too, are in our guide to parquet care. Frequently asked questions
Will parquet feel too cold in a bedroom compared with carpet?+
No — quite the opposite. Wood is a poor conductor of heat, so oak parquet feels warmer underfoot than tiles, stone or even vinyl. It never reads as cold. If you want more warmth still, parquet can be laid over underfloor heating, and there is always room for a small rug beside the bed.
Is parquet in a bedroom a good choice for allergy sufferers?+
Yes. Oak parquet is anti-static and does not attract dust, so particles settle instead of hanging in the air and are easily wiped away. Unlike carpet, parquet does not accumulate allergens, skin flakes or dust mites, which is why it is so often recommended for allergy sufferers and for children's bedrooms.
Which parquet shade suits a small bedroom?+
Light tones — natural, whitewashed or greyish oak — work best in a small or poorly lit bedroom. They reflect light and open the space up visually. Dark tones belong in larger, well-lit rooms. Before you decide, order free samples and judge the shade in your own light.
Oiled or lacquered parquet for a bedroom?+
In a bedroom, where traffic is light and moisture is not an issue, an oiled surface is an excellent and almost risk-free choice — a warm matt texture that is pleasant to touch and that shows the grain of the wood. A lacquered surface is slightly easier to clean, but in a bedroom that advantage counts for much less.
Can parquet be laid over underfloor heating in a bedroom?+
Yes. Our multilayer oak boards are dimensionally stable and suitable for underfloor heating. Temperature changes should be gradual and even, and the surface temperature should never exceed 27 °C. In a bedroom underfloor heating is especially welcome, because in the morning a bare foot meets a surface that is already warm.
