Parquet and Children: Is It Right for Active Families?
2 September 2026

Why parquet works well for families
Hygiene
Unlike carpet, parquet gives dust, allergens and microscopic mites nowhere to settle. For a child with allergies or asthma, a wood floor can make a genuine difference to daily life. Oak also contains tannic acids, which have a mild natural antibacterial effect.
Easy cleaning
Family life means spilt milk, biscuit crumbs and pencil marks. Lacquered parquet deals with almost all of it in about two minutes with a damp cloth. The same spills would mark a carpet for good.
Indoor air and health
The whole Terris Timber collection is FSC and PEFC certified and meets the strictest European emissions standards (E1, EC1 Plus). No VOCs, no formaldehyde, no synthetic compounds. Children sleep and play at floor level, so the air in the room deserves attention.
Warmth underfoot
Wood is warm to bare feet, and children spend a great deal of time sitting and playing on the floor. Oak holds a surface temperature roughly 4 °C higher than tiles. Combined with underfloor heating, it is hard to better.
Acoustics
Wood absorbs sound, so the noise of play — running about, dropped toys — is softer than on tiles or laminate. In an apartment building that matters to the neighbours as much as it does to you.
The challenges with children — and the fixes
Dropped toys
A hard plastic or metal toy falling from 1 m can leave a dent in an oiled floor. What helps:
- Play mats (rubber, acrylic, or children's EVA tiles)
- Defined play zones with a softer covering laid over the parquet
- Lacquered parquet takes impact better than oiled — the protective film spreads the blow
Milk and juice spills
Move quickly: wipe dry within five minutes. Lacquered parquet has no absorption problem; on an oiled floor a mark can remain if the spill is left. More on this in our guide to scratches and stains.
Pencils and marker pens
On lacquered parquet, a damp cloth is usually enough, or a little isopropyl alcohol on a cloth for a stubborn mark. Almost all children's markers are water-soluble.
Scratches from chairs
Dining and desk chairs are the most serious enemy a family floor faces. The answer is felt pads under every chair leg, replaced every six months — or every three months in a house with four children.
Butter and cooking oil on the floor
Grease comes up with a damp cloth and a mild floor cleaner. Lacquered parquet is resistant to it. More detail in our guide to wood flooring in kitchens.
Which parquet is best for a family with children?
1. Lacquered oak
Oak Bergen (matt lacquer) is our first recommendation for families. A resilient surface and a straightforward cleaning routine, and a matt finish hides small scratches far better than a gloss one.
2. Brushed, oiled oak
Oak Innsbruck or Oak Vienna. A brushed surface naturally disguises micro-damage — what would read as a blemish on a smooth floor simply becomes part of the rustic character.
3. Darker shades — with caution
A dark floor (Oak Oxford) looks superb, but every speck of dust shows on it. With active children you may find yourself cleaning more often.
Setting up a child's room
- Play mat — adds warmth, damps noise, and protects the parquet under a heavy toy table
- Bed — never push it hard against the wall (the floor needs room to move); use soft edge protection
- Desk and chairs — felt pads are not optional
- Wardrobe — never drag it when loaded; lift it, set it down, and spread the weight
- Underfloor heating — very popular in children's rooms. The whole of our collection is suitable; see our guide to underfloor heating.
The governing principle: prevention over reaction

Where children live, some wear is normal. The aim is not that nothing is ever dropped on the floor, but that the risks are reduced:
- Door mats — they hold back around 80 % of the sand carried in from outside. Sand is an abrasive; it is what creates micro-scratches.
- Indoor shoes — no outdoor shoes in the house, ever. Teach children the habit early.
- Play zones — put a mat where the children actually spend their time
- Humidity control — 40–60 %. With children in the house, a humidifier during the heating season is not only good for the floor; it is good for their health too (fewer colds).
If damage does happen — how to put it right
Over a few years of family life the surface will inevitably take some knocks. The good news is that most of it can be repaired:
- Surface scratches → local repair (oil, wax filler sticks). More here.
- Moderate scratches → local sanding and refinishing of the surface
- Deep damage → replace the plank. More here.
- Full renovation (every 15–20 years) → sanding the whole floor. More here.
FAQ
Is parquet suitable for babies?
Ideally so. It is hygienic, easy to clean and warm. Use play mats wherever the baby spends time.
Which parquet is the most hard-wearing?
Lacquered three-layer oak with a 3 mm wear layer. Our Oak Bergen is a popular choice with families.
Should children be kept from wearing shoes indoors?
Yes, in every case. Outdoor dirt, sand and grit are the enemies of a wood floor — and no better for children's health.
Does parquet work in a home with a dog?
With the right choice, yes. More on that here.
